R U OK? Day is an important reminder that a conversation can make a real difference. It encourages us to check in with the people around us, ask how they’re really going and, most importantly, take the time to listen. At Reliable Food Distributors, we brought the team together over lunch to raise money for R U OK? and create an opportunity to connect away from the usual workday.

Have a KitKat and a Chitchat

This year, we kept things simple: have a KitKat and a chitchat. Sometimes checking in doesn’t need to feel like a big or difficult conversation. It can start while having lunch, sharing a KitKat or catching up with a workmate. What matters is making the time to ask “R U OK?” and being ready to genuinely listen to the answer. Our team spent lunch together doing exactly that, while also raising money to support the work of R U OK?

More Than One Day

While R U OK? Day puts an important spotlight on mental health and connection, checking in with the people around us shouldn’t be limited to one day of the year. A workmate might seem quieter than usual. Someone may be having a tough week. Sometimes you simply haven’t properly caught up in a while. Starting a conversation gives people the opportunity to talk when they need it.

Start With a Simple Question

You don’t need to have all the answers to support someone. Sometimes being there, listening and showing that you genuinely care is enough to start. So, take a moment today to check in with someone around you. Have a KitKat, have a chitchat and ask the question that matters: R U OK?
